Sheâd simply had to get away from that house and the party, Meredith admitted as she knocked on Kellyâs hotel room door. Thanks to Alex sheâd been feeling blue and hurt and flat-out miserable when sheâd seen Kelly practically run out of the place. And before sheâd even gotten a chance to talk to the woman about doing the photos, too.
Only once sheâd gotten into her car, sheâd realized she had no place to go. In the past when things had gotten to be too much, sheâd always gone to Alexâs. But not this time. Not ever again, she swore. Suddenly the ache inside her started all over again as she thought of him, of the way he had rejected her. And on the heels of that hurt came anger. Well, heâd never get the chance to hurt her again, she vowed. Sheâd show him. Sheâd show everyone that she could do just fine. And then they would be sorry. More determined than ever, she pounded her fist on the door. âDamn it, Kelly. Open the door. Itâs Meredith.â
Moments later locks clicked and the door opened. Kelly stood there wearing a thick white terry-cloth robe, a towel wrapped around her head and a scowl on her face. âWhat are you doing here?â
âYou left the party before we got a chance to talk about you doing those ads for Indulgences,â Meredith informed her. âSo I decided to come over.â
âItâs late, and as you can see I was getting ready for bed.â
âItâs not that late.â Exasperated, she said, âOh for pityâs sake, quit scowling at me and let me in. I really do need to talk with you.â
The elevator dinged. âListen, Meredith, now is really not a good time to start badgering me about doing photos for you because Iâm in a foul mood andââ
âThen we should get along just fine because so am I,â she said, and to prove her point, she barely missed catching Kellyâs bare toes with her spike heels as she bulldozed past her and into the hotel suite.
âCome right in and make yourself at home, why donât you,â Kelly told her with no small amount of sarcasm.
âThank you, I will,â Meredith replied, feeling just as annoyed as Kelly looked. She walked over and sat down on one of the couches. âAnd you might as well stop glaring at me. I told you, Iâm in a lousy mood, too.â
After a momentâs hesitation, Kelly walked over to the opposite couch and sat down. âYou know, Meredith, in all the years we were at St. Josephâs together and even when you came to New York a few years ago, I donât think Iâve ever seen you do that before.â
âDo what?â
âWalk past a mirror and not check out your own reflection.â
âFunny,â Meredith told her.
âWill wonders never cease? You still havenât said a word about the tacky robe that Iâm wearing.â
âYou already know itâs tacky. You donât need me to tell you,â Meredith advised her. âAnd if that little dig about the mirror was supposed to tick me off so that Iâd leave, youâll have to do a lot better than that.
